Electives and Other Courses

There are a number of electives and other recommended entrepreneurship courses offered at The University of Arizona, including:

Topics in Entrepreneurship for Scientists
The objective of the course is to make students aware of Economical, Technological, Managerial and Organizational aspects associated with offshoring of knowledge-based professional services. The course will achieve this through case discussions of different delivery models (captive center, joint venture, 3rd party), value addition models (low-end, mid-range, high-end), and the impact of business and policy environments to each of these models. Graduate-level requirements include a mid-term exam and/or a presentation in class.
Early Stage Technology Assessment
Whether scientist/inventor, investor, or business partner, assessment of early stage technologies is a critical skill set in today’s technology market place. This course is a pre-business plan course designed to equip students to effectively evaluate and assess early stage technologies and products to identify potential applications and market opportunities, enabling decisions to advance research and design and to encourage early stage investment.
Innovation Principles and Environments
Provides an overview of entrepreneurial approach, strategies, and skills within a range of environments to advance technology and innovations. Students can pair this course with a one unit lab course (ENTR 420/520L) to develop innovation-specific feasibility study or business plan.
Marketing of Innovation
This course focuses on how to bring cutting-edge technologies to the marketplace. It is designed to facilitate the hands-on application of marketing concepts and practices to the very difficult world of commercializing new discoveries in science and engineering. The goal is to provide an opportunity for a select group of MBAs to apply their skills in formulating a market assessment and preliminary launch strategy for the “newest of the new” in the laboratory sciences. You do not need a technical background, although this can be an advantage; however, you do need to have a strong interest in applying your knowledge to help scientists move their discoveries into commercial application.
Venture Capital
Topics include dynamics/complexities of venture capital (private equity), management of VC funds, the VC underwriting process/function, and risk/return management.
Social Entrepreneurship
Focusing your business and entrepreneurial skills on social and/or environmental problem solving.
Camerata Music Program, Careers in Music
Class designed to prepare students for a professional life in music. One specific music-business topic will be presented each week, with the appropriate lecturer, chosen for his/her expertise, presenting the class.
