What It Takes.

The Student's Perspective

By Don Winans, McGuire class of 2005

The Entrepreneurship Program provides every student with a unique opportunity, not only to learn, but also to gain experience in how to bring their ideas into fruition.

Students will be challenged to apply their ideas and be tested by respected investors, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. Interaction with these mentors will allow each student to grow their entrepreneurial spirit and learn from decades of experience.

You will be asked to put on every hat as you build your venture. This, of course, requires that you have a basic understanding of every business field: finance, marketing, economics, management, corporate law, communications, etc.

Being an expert is not necessary, but having a strength, and complementing that strength when finding team members, is very advantageous. This is experiential learning (you will learn by actually doing), so be familiar with how to try, fail, and try again.

The McGuire Program differs from any other program at The University of Arizona by providing the opportunity for students to change the world around them. Through the rigor of the program, you will learn to overcome challenges by using what you have been reading in all those text books over the years. Through interaction with business leaders, you will learn to present and defend your ideas to prominent executives. You will graduate with the tools to influence the world, or create your own.

At the most basic level, every candidate should be willing. You must be willing to overcome the many obstacles that you will face when trying to find a viable idea and make it a solid business venture. You must be willing to work hard and long at researching, learning, and presenting everything there is to know about your work. You must be willing to grow — to find your hidden talents.

As the program presents you with new experiences and exciting opportunities, you must be willing to try new things. In short, the most important quality you should possess is the desire to get the very most out of this program.
